My husband and I are visiting Philadelphia from NYC this August. I just booked us for one week at a Bed & Breakfast, but since have read that many neighborhoods in Phila. are dangerous and am not sure about the one we're staying in. According to the website, it's in Bella Vista. The address is on Fitzwater & South 10th Street. Is this an okay area? Will we be safe going to and from? Thanks!

i think that's real close to south street and the italian market - a fairly decent, but safe walk up to market street and the el

real close to the broad street line, but not sure how nice it is when you get over there or where the nearest stop would be

should be OK in that place though

No, I think your best bet is to find a B&B somewhere along Cecil B. Moore Ave. Seriously though, I can't picture a B&B in the middle of a dangerous neighborhood. Although, it would make for an interesting comedy.

Bella Vista is a cool, funky, gentrified neighborhood and that B&B is gorgeous, I walk by it all the time. You are not near anything bad, though if you were from the Kansas prairie you'd probably think it's scary ... you're from NYC, I doubt it will. South Street might look a bit ghetto at that end, especially on a Fri/Sat night - the crowd can be a bit young and rowdy - but it's not dangerous just loud.

Yea, unless you think EMO boys are scary in their girls jeans and guyliner, you should be ok around South street.

It's ok but not the most convenient location since it is mostly residential and a very long walk up to tourist areas near Market St, especially in the height of summer when it might be "stinking" hot. A bus runs north on 9th and south on 10th about every 20 minutes and cabs are plentyful. However if I were you I would try to rebook in somthing closer to Walnut, Chestnut, Market or Arch. I know the B&B you are talking about has bargain rates so that is a consideration.

Thank you all for your replies so far. Bryson, we are staying for a full week so the B&B was a cheaper option for us than the ones closer to town. We figured we'd take the bus around most places as our budget is fairly small. It's nice to know there are lots of cabs, too, should we get lazy. Can you just hail them down like in NY?

yes, but you'll probably need to walk up to south st. or west to broad, unless you catch a cab dropping someone off. BV is generally residential so cabs drop off but aren't as frequent as the center city streets.

you can always call for a pick up - 215 -492-6500
