inspection is every two years... So is registration. right? Since nj does not do the registration stickers on the plates anymore how and why would you get a yearly registration if no one could tell? We've only been here a year and did not get our new reg in the email...

Inspection is every 2 years but registration is annual.

State of New Jersey - Motor Vehicle Commission

I've been living in NJ for for 10 years and yes it's confusing, especially when inspection is different than registration. The bottom line is that it's 2 separate thing.

To answer your question on whyou need registration every year. You say "why would you get a yearly registration if no one could tell?" Well if you get pull over, you won't have a current registration card. Check your registration card in your glovebox, it has an expiration date and it expires annually unless you got a brand new car. If you don't have current registration when requested by the police, you will get a ticket.

Without the registration sticker, you could drive around a full year without registration. I did, not knowing and guess what happened when I walk to DMV to renew? They said "Oh by the way, you didn't pay for last year. You have to pay for this and last year.

Registration renewal can be done on the web or at the local DMV. They charge a service fee if you do renew online.

Go check your registration card and check the expiration date.

BTW. I assume the registration is kept annually cause it's a way for DMV to make sure that you have insurance.

FYI - the South Asians (mostly Indian) seem to be in the Woodcrest/Ashland/Springdale parts of Cherry Hill and the adjacent areas of Voorhees.

You'll find Indian owned businesses along Burnt Mill Rd from the intersection of Route 561 down to White Horse Rd and across the tracks on the other side of the Lindenwold train station.

It's mostly Sikh or Hindu. Not a big muslim community that I know of.

I know the OP wants to rent only. I would like to know the cost of:
middle class housing (3 BR, nice) + property tax
in these two towns (North Wales/Lansdale vs. Cherry Hill).

(Please ignore other issues like state income tax, wage tax, etc.)

www.realtor.com has the information but you have to do the work. Use 08002 for Cherry Hill area and 19446 for Lansdale area.

I just moved to S. Jersey from N. Phila. My car insurance went down. And the commute to center city is sooo much easier (quicker and less stressful). The R5 ride will be long and if you were to drive from Lansdale 476 to 76 can be a mess if you leave during typical commuting hours. I've found S. Jersey (Chestnut Hill, Haddon Township, Haddonfield, Collingswood) to be incredibly convenient in terms of amenities offered and proximity to city.

@FromGA, you can also look at prufoxroach.com. Cherry Hill is in Camden County, NJ and Lansdale is in Montgomery County PA. You can search for homes according to whichever criteria you are interested (#bed/bath, single family home etc) and this website allows you to determine what your monthly payment will be on a given home after down payment, taking into account property tax. I found it very helpful when comparing NJ to PA homes.

Awesome ... that clears the air on almost all of my doubts. For us, the biggest priority has always been a safe neighborhood, and hence I have been living in a small town called Simsbury in Conn. which till about last year had almost no South Asian community at all. We found folks in Simsbury quite warm and welcoming. The Hartford metro area has very little public transport.

A good school district will matter to me only when junior turns 5 (two-and-a-half years down the line). He goes to a montessori (and not a kindergarten) as of now. Though my wife and I love city living, things have changed after junior arrived, and we've become suburbanites (for lack of a better word).

Both of us intend to use the car for nothing more than daily errands, dropping junior off to day-care or his montessori, and not for commuting to work (we prefer public transport). Having experienced SEPTA's Regional Rail, Subway and Buses, I'd rather stick to Regional Rail. Throwing PATCO in the mix, I guess that should be fine too.

About Indian community - of course we care about our festivals and occasions, the biggest advantage of having proximity to one's community would be availability of ethnic groceries which one wouldn't find in a Stop and Shop / Pathmark.

From the Cost of Living perspective, if Heating, Electricity and Insurance cost lesser in NJ, the choice is obvious. Apartment rents will cost almost the same in both areas I guess. Lets see what the wife says now
