What kind of bar scene are you looking for (dance type music, rock music, sports bar, sit down and talk bar, karaoke, etc etc) and does the area matter? I'm in that age group...

Lower than both. Boston is the capital of New England. New York is the capital of "everything" save politics. There's a cost-of-living feature on the main City-Data page (not the main forum page).

Go to the Old City area - Market and Chestnut between Front ("1st") and 4th, particularly along 2nd St - and take your pick.
