Row houses came in many styles depending on when they were built. You don't say but I have a feeling it is the old fashioned, victorian to wwII style with a front porch and stuck on gingerbread that you are in love with. Pretty much all the neighborhoods with this kind of house are now in distress. A large part of the reason is that the houses themselves are worn out and obsolete. The better neighborhoods, mostly in Northeast Philly or far south Philly have the row houses built after 1960 which are obviously more modern in design. Most have garages and many have lawns. Society Hill and adjacent Queen Village have the 18th and early 19th century row houses which are usually called townhouses but they are very expensive. Northern Liberties, just above eastern Center City has many pre victorian houses that are less fancy then SH or QV, some restored and some not. If they are in good shape they also go for a lot of money since that is a trendy and gentrifing neighborhood.

I believe 100% your telling the truth.I've had similar experiences but that doesn't mean it's the rule. There's part's of the city to avoid, part's that are desirable and parts that are walking the line of both.Your post offered nothing informative or helpful just more negativity.

Do you think we should hold back important quality of life issues from perspective people because you say so?? Do you think that is right to do? serious??
Absolutely not.But like I already addressed you offer no information, guidance,or direction.I wouldn't tell an outsider that Frankford is a great spot to buy a house but at the same time I wouldn't suggest that all of N.E. Philly is devoid of nice livable neighborhoods.

So you had enough of your situation and went to Jersey.Nothing wrong with that but stop trashing the whole entire city.Your not helping anyone and are only perpetuating the stereotype of Philadelphia being a classless dump.

Instead try offering something helpful.

please don't put words in my mouth.. I never said ANY of that. Never said it was a rule.. never trashed the city.. never said all of the NE is like that.. All I said(Im not going thru it again) was to consider that what I told them. Nothing more.. Get a life.. Stop being so defeatist.

What I offered can be very helpful so that they don't get in a position we were..

So...any recommended good rowhome type neighborhoods that are both reasonable-priced...but safe enough for a guy with a wife and kid?

I saw the Manayunk ones near Main Street...and they look incredible. Love that style. But, seems like it's a bit pricey and not ideal for families at all.

Are there good rowhome type neighborhoods with places to walk to, good for families, yet still reasonable for someone who isn't a high earner supporting a family, etc.?

Please note that the poster is asking about locations, not if they should or should not buy a rowhome.

I would look at U City in the Penn A school zone.
Great public school, really city life, a bunch of row homes and near a park.
Fairmount is another option, but more pricey and the public school is not as strong.

There are tons of row homes in South Philadelphia. Predominantly Italian and some Irish. All of the best markets with very decent prices. Family oriented. Close to all kinds of public transportation and close to highway.

Upper Olney - interesting! I just saw that area has a heavy asian influence as well. (South Philly as well).

My wife is Asian, my kid is mixed. So that is even better.

Mount Airy and Germantown are great rowhome/twin neighborhoods. They have some of the oldest housing in the city and it seems that every block has different style homes.
