The first thing I'm doing when I move there is buy a map to find the different street addresses. Is there a type that is the best and most updated--and thorough--type I can buy there?
This might sound like a stupid question, but Houston has a map sold in an orange binder that has all the streets in the entire region and easy to understand directions to find them. I surely hope Phoenix has something comparable?

Out in the Southwest, Thomas Bros Guide Books is the best one:

Thomas Bros Guide - Phoenix (http://www.thomasguidebooks.com/cgi-bin/shop.pl/SID=2090026394/item=43/buy=1/page=cartf.htm - broken link)

They're $24.95, looks like they're giving a 20% discount on the current edition so your total price will be about 20 bucks. I'm getting one when I move!

That's what we bought when we moved here. I think I used it 5-8 times. I just google map everything now, it's cheaper and easier. Phoenix is very easy to get around once you get the main street names down.

Yeah, probably don't really need one if you're familiar with grid layouts, which is so common in the SW! I really needed one in San Diego when I lived there for a year. Those canyons and dead end streets were so frustrating. And I knew the area somewhat from growing up near there. But for Phoenix... how hard can it be to learn stuff? Most people use GPS now but I can't be bothered.

Wide World Of Maps, a local company, has been putting out this map book (the "Yellow One") of the Phx area for years.....

Yellow1 Metro Phoenix :: Phoenix Mapping Service (http://www.maps4u.com/Yellow1/phoenix.html - broken link)

it's in a binder like you were hoping for and, if you're a Costco member, it's sold there for about 40% off or so....it's the classic map book for Phoenix

as one said here, Google Maps is very well laid out and easy to use - IF you have a computer in your car!

Once you get here you'll be amazed at how easy Phoenix actually is to navigate. Once you learn the main streets, which can be miles and miles long and traverse all the burbs as well, and which side of Central are streets and which are avenues, etc. it's truly a piece of cake. I have never, in my entire life, ever gotten lost in Phoenix. Some places I've lived I never could figure out north/south/east/west and was always getting lost!

Google maps will be your best friend.

Great on your laptop or desktop. Plug in your address and search nearby to find anything.

They have a free app for android, blackberry and iphone users, which sync with your phone's GPS. I love this app as you can open it while driving and it knows where you are.

Yep, I buy one of those every few years, since there is so much new construction, and I often have to visit properties in other parts of the valley. I think they are like $15 at Costco.
