What are the better hiking spots in the area for a novice hiker? Anything in the Tempe area? With the weather getting cooler it will soon be time to explore. All recommendations welcome. How's the little mountain behind Sun Devil Stadium? I see people trekking up from time to time.

There's a road up that mountain that's good exercise. Then there's Papago Park, on the northern edge of Tempe, and of course South Mountain park to the west. There's mountain trails and the somewhat tamer, but still up and down across the desert, Desert Classic trail in South Mountain, it's easy to access from the east end of the park.

You can get trail maps for South Mountain Park here: http://phoenix.gov/PARKS/hiksogud.html

Check out South Mountain. I typically start off at the 24th St trail-head.

After a few months of hitting those trails its a must to go hike Camelback mountain. There are 2 different main trails, one of them is more difficult than the other...the only somewhat tough section for a beginner i would say would be a small section on one of the two tralis where they have railing to help you walk up the steep rock.

its a great view from the top and a rewarding hike!!!

Squaw peak is also pretty fun

yes, definitely go up that little hill by the stadium, called Tempe Butte and/or Hayden Butte....surprisingly great view of the entire valley and you can watch the planes land at Sky Harbor (if the wind is out of the west!!)....access the route up just south of the old Hayden mill.....some rocks on the very top to contend with.....

I finally left the confines of my apartment and hit the trails. Walked from my place to Hayden Butte, up to the top and down, strolled down Mill Ave and walked home. Let me a wee bit sore in the legs and lower back.

Think I'll hike Papago Park and work my way up the trail ladder. It was very cool getting out.

Why don't you try the rail that goes around Usery Pass (aka Scar Face). It's a 7 mile hike but it is best at about March, when the desert is flourishing green with grass and wildflowers.

Never heard about it until now. I'll look into it. Before I take a 7 mile trail, I'll need to find out what I'm getting into. Hayden Butte let me know I'm outta shap
