I'm thinking of buying a townhome that's located near the airport, near 5th street. Is that location very noisy because of the airport? I like the location because it's near public transportation. I plan to attend school in the area.

5th Street near the airport? Do you mean Tempe? 5th is relatively close to the flight path, which is essentially over the river/Town Lake about 5 blocks away. I see your thread title says "downtown". What is the cross street, and have you been there yourself to scope out any noise issue?

If you mean 5th St in Tempe I grew up right there and you can definitely hear the planes, but also the trains aswell. You get use to them and dont even notice them after a while.

Thanks for the info. I'm in Austin, Tx and haven't been to the area yet. I plan on going to school in the area and want to be near public transportation.

I would most definitely check out the area before moving there. Don't buy anything without visiting! I'm attending ASU this fall and am also looking at apartments. It's hard from 2500 miles away. After flying out there several times, I finally decided to rent, first, while I get to know the neighborhoods better. The pictures you see online on real estate sites look very different from when you visit the properties and see for yourself! Just my 2 cents.

This is really good advice. I looked at a house for a member here, and discovered that the pictures on the website were out and out misrepresentations. If you can't come out ahead of time, find something you can rent for a short term while you look around.

Being that it's so close to Sky Harbor there is going to be a lot of jet noise, you'll get used to it.

This area is very walkable and close to public transportation, light rail, bus routes, and I think there's a neighborhood circular bus too.

This area in Tempe isn't quite downtown but it is within walking distance.
