I was thinking about trying to get out there for a few days this winter, I'll be getting a bunch of paid vacation days at work. Unfortunately I'd probably be going alone since everyone in my family is broke. I'm not looking to do a whole lot, but just get a feel for the city and the desert environment. Although I definately want to walk along some hiking trails, I want to hear that crunchy sound of dirt under my feet! I'm thinking about 3 days should do it, any more and I might get lonely. On the other hand it's a long flight from Florida so I want to stay long enough to make it worth it.

I need a cheap motel in an area with a bit of street life. So that if I get bored in my motel room I can at least step outside to see some people and enjoy the cool night. Is there an area like that, say downtown or Tempe? Unfortunately I had to quit drinking so bars are off limits for me.

I took a trip to LA earlier this year, it's the only other city that captures my interest. After this trip I'll know where I want to go.

Tempe is a great start, but I also advise checking out motels near old town Scottsdale. There are endless shops and it's definitely more upscale than Tempe is and will give you a great feel for just how western Arizona can be. Definitely check out camelback mountain if you want a hiking trail and it's not that far of a drive from Scottsdale... If you have been to LA and liked it I think (and other native californians can chime in here too..) you will be pleasantly surprised at how friendly, clean and awesome the Phoenix area is. It reminds me a lot of southern California as far as the laid back atmosphere and feel of it. Hope you have a great time!

My vote would be for Old Town Scottsdale. If bars aren't your thing anymore, you'll find a lot more to do here, than in Tempe. You can take the free trolley and enjoy the shops, art galleries and restaurants. You can find an inexpensive hotel/motel at www.hotwire.com.

The motel 6 at Fashion Square in Scottsdale is pretty damn hard to beat for cost and location.
