Could anyone PM me a recommendation for a fairly priced electrician in the general Chandler area?

You wouldn't think it so difficult to find one, but so far the internet is not getting me results. I just have a faulty power outlet in the back yard, that should also feed the pool light.

The company I just called stated $60 per hr with a min' 2 hr charge. So that's $120 even if it takes 5 minutes to fix. Is that normal? I thought it was high and declined.

edit - or just post a company here, if it's allowed.

Why not try to fix it yourself? Go down to the HD and pickup a new receptacle. Very cheap and removing and installing three wires is not rocket science.

I haven't got a clue about American power systems, and wouldn't know where to start with the fault finding

I'd love to fix it myself though. Maybe I'll search online & see if I can educate myself. No one has recommended an electrician or commented on the quote I had, so maybe that is a normal price rate...

Try Yelp

Also, try to negotiate by the job and not the hour. Specify what you need done and negotiate a fee. Any con artist can stretch a job by a few hours or more so you don't want to give people an incentive to take as long as they like. If they aren't willing to do it, find someone else because there are plenty of people who will work by the job.

$60 an hour seems high. I've heard of $60 for the first hour and then 30-40 for every additional hour but a consistent $60 per hour is high and many electrical jobs can take the whole day (8-12 hours) so you want to be careful with paying by the hour.

It has been years since I used this company, but they are still active according to AZ Registrar of Contractors:

Gastelum Orona Electrical Contractors Inc
1317 E Martha Dr
Casa Grande, AZ 85122-5454 Phone: (480) 963-4479
License# 150401 (480) 963-4479

They took care of a couple of minor things for me (ceiling fan and coach light sensor installation) and the cost was very reasonable (again, this was a few years ago). Though based in Casa Grande, they came to my home in San Tan Valley and I was not charged an additional trip fee. Good luck!

This might be a "handyman" job depending on what is broken. Every neighborhood has them. You can find their ads in a local area newspaper they toss in the driveway, a community board like at the corner store etc, other places that I can't think of now.

If it is the power outlet that feeds the pool light, it is most likely a GFCI outlet. And most of the time when that receptacle trips when flipping the pool light on, it is not an issue with the GFCI outlet, but the pool light. Pool lights do not last forever. They have two seals on them. When the front seal goes, it will trip the GFCI and ruin the bulb. Replacing the bulb and seal fixes the issue. When the rear seal goes, the bulb will be fine, but it will still trip the GFCI outlet. Only fix in that case is to install an new pool light with cord.

The pool light equipment has been replaced. It's all new, and the tech who put it in informed me there was a power supply issue i.e. no power. So the light itself is ruled out as the cause.
