I'm throwing a birthday party for my child. She doesn't want presents and would rather have gifts or money donated to a local cause. I know there is the Thomas J. Pappas school for homeless children. Are there any other legitimate and credible charities in the area that any of you could recommend? I know there are a lot of scam artists out there so what are ones that you have personally given to that you can vouch for.

Your daughter is very generous. What a nice thing to do. If she's an animal lover, HALO Animal Rescue does great work taking in and adopting out animals that would have otherwise been euthanized. I've donated to them in the past.

Thanks for the idea and compliment. Yeah, these kids these days are really special and it's not just my daughter. A lot of bday parties we attend are doing similar things. We buy our kids what they need when they need them so we think these bday parties a great way to give back and the kids and families really enjoy participating too. Rather that amass a lot of gifts that you won't use, I would rather them go to a cause in which those gifts or proceeds will do a lot more good

How about making the birthday party a field trip to Phoenix Childrens Hospital and donate all the gifts to the children there.

That's not a bad idea, thanks

The City of Phoenix Public School System seems an excellent place to donate to, as they have very shabby resources, and the students they are educating today are the ones who will be caring for us in a few decades when we will all be invalids. You can also claim the donation on your taxes and also specify which particular school(s) you would like to receive the donation. Phoenix Elementary School District #1 Donation Page

Or if your daughter attends another school district, a donation to that institution would also be very fitting.

Oh, and by the way, you should be very proud of you daughter, and let her know as such; her decision is very noble, especially in our modern society saturated in greed and materialism. I respect her for her decision, and you for having educated her in a way that would render her so mature and able to surpass our societal norms.

And now that I have paid you the compliment, feel free to make the donation in it's entirety to my son's school, it's Faith North Elementary School.

AASK-- Aid to Adoption of Special Kids. As your daughter likely knows, based on her generous nature, there are lots of kids not so lucky as she.

We like to give to AAWL, and my wife has volunteered for them in the past. Great organization.

Arizona Animal Welfare League & SPCA | Arizona's oldest and largest no-kill shelter.

Also - great job raising your daughter.
