If you have the light reset and drive straight to the testing place, the car will fail. You need to drive it for a bit after the light has been reset (varies by car). This happened to the BF. Had some work done, light was reset, car failed. He drove the car 100 miles or so, re-tested, it passed.

Just an FYI to anyone out there.

Thanks Elle! And I'm glad this thread was brought back to life, we might need a good mechanic once we get up there ourselves.

I've had a check engine light on for years on my vehicle. It hasn't seem to cause any real problems with my car and it wasn't an issue in Illinois since we didn't have emissions testing.

One of the best investments I have made recently was getting my own OBD-II reader.

Bluetooth OBD2 scan tool

I'm able to pull and read my own codes, reset the car, and check when my car has gone through all its cycles. This particular one works with an Android based phone. Obviously if someone doesn't have an Android based smart phone they would need to buy another one, but there are many out there. It was well worth the money for me!
