I have been living near Arizona Mills Mall for the last year and my lease is expiring soon. While the area is alright I would prefer to live walking distance to downtown, Tempe, or Scottsdale. Anyone know any halfway decent complexes ?

It might be easier to find a place that has bus routes to the light rail or your desired destination in Scottsdale at that price. I did not want to pay a premium to live on the light rail or in downtown, but the 56 picks up right outside my house and has a stop at the light rail, which takes me to Mill, Downtown, etc.

$600.00 per month?

In Tempe, maybe.

In Scottsdale, it's a long shot.

Apartments near downtowns are usually higher rents unless you find an older place in a not-so-nice area, and if it were me I wouldn't chance it.

I don't know of any specific complexes, but have you considered loft living? Downtown Tempe has quite a few of those, largely due to the close proximity of ASU. In any case, they would be good walking distance to the Mill Avenue district. I'm not too sure about lofts in downtown Scottsdale ... but it seems like most of them are located in or near centralized downtown districts. It's certainly an option worth considering.

Wait - if you are at AZ Mills then you've got two buses that take you to the light rail from there, depending on exactly where you are. Spending $4 on an all-day transportation pass gets you to the downtown Tempe areas in about 20-25 minutes, which has to got to be significantly cheaper than the increase in rent will be to live right in those areas. Even if you went every single day, that's a $120 cost out of pocket. I'd guess you'd be very hard pressed to find an apartment that isn't under $120 cost difference in those areas versus what you're paying now.

you can get something around old town for that price, but it will be small and it will be a studio

I agree. Scottsdale tends to be more expensive, and anything around Old Town will be rather pricey. The OP said he/she wants something within walking distance to "downtown", and then mentioned Tempe & Scottsdale. I overlooked the "downtown" part at first, and thought it meant specifically Tempe or Scottsdale. If downtown Phoenix is an option, I would definitely consider it. The only problem is the lack of decent food stores/supermarkets within walking distance.
