Watched first hand how Whitman's easy targeting of people was cut short by a number of students firing back at him from dorm & apartment windows with their deer rifles (UT wasn't a "gun free" zone then - my own brother kept his guns in his dorm closet when he worked/lived at the student health center).

The Austin police officers on the ground were shooting back with their issued S&W Model 10 .38 Special revolvers - Whitman was 300' above them behind a stone parapet wall.

Two LEOs, with the help of a bookstore manager who had his own handgun, took Whitman down FTF with a department issue pump shotgun and a S&W revolver (the shotgun primarily).

A self-loading (semi-auto) AR-15 would have been just as effective in that situation as a select, or full, auto, IMO. The students who were providing the suppressive fire from the ground were most likely using bolt action rifles or lever guns.

Next thing ya know the ASUPD will be getting a "free" MRAP from the government.

Ironically, here in Texas it is legal for a CHL holder to carry concealed while walking around a college campus, but cannot carry inside any of the buildings.

Whitman didn't need any stinkin' permit at all.
Yikes! Glad you made it through to talk about it. Thanks for sharing, it's a real eye opener.

Its already happened here remember the guy that killed the six nurses at the nursing school at the U of A. By the time the campus police called the Tucson PD SWAT team, guess what all over? Virgina Tech...there are so many. Guess what,,now U of A carry patrol rifles in their vehicles. With all the radicals on campus now a days and convicted felons like the professor at ASU,,they need all they can get.

And NAU is leasing some F35s burning a special 20% mixture of algae-derived green jet fuel. Apparently the rugged terrain and low population density surrounding Flagstaff might harbor campus terr'ists, similar to the mountains of Afghanistan.

As a bonus, NAU is claiming that their new elite air force will have the ability to neutralize a campus threat at ASU in Tempe, in even less time than ASU's own ground based forces.

Conspiracy theorist? I just watch the news and read fact based accounts of militarized policing. Rise of the Warrior Cop is a good start and traces the history of militarized policing following Charles Whitman in Austin.

I look at it as a way to advertise a bit. The fact that ASU has advertised these rifles, and the word gets out, that alone might make a few nuts think twice before doing their thing as they obviously want the least resistance they can find to accomplish their "goal".

I think it might be interesting to some that these crazies have existed for a long time now, all over the world, and that this isn't just some recent phenomena.
