What's everyone think of the gigabit speed Cox is offering/will offer in the future to residents in the Phoenix metro? Would anyone jump for it as soon as its available? I honestly don't think I'd have any use for all that speed at this point though of course the future is a different story.

Downloading 300~ish gigs of data over Cox's network in a month got me a "friendly" email from Cox, pointing out that I was an exceptionally heavy user of the internet - the elite, top 5%

Their own statements regarding "heavy" users indicate that we're as rare as three-headed monkeys. Nobody "needs" hundreds of gigs of data in a month, except pirates & terrorists & cord-cutters who watch Netflix in the "default" settings..

Interesting. Yesterday was a heavy computer day for me and I noticed the internet just crawled.

I cringe when I hear 'upgrade'; seems whenever a company 'rolls out' a new and improved version of something, snafus and/or price hikes aren't far behind.

Mine sucked as well yesterday. Netflix was a no go.

Apparently the issue is fixed, at least according to Cox, but I'm still only getting 7.95 mbps on a 50 mbps plan. Are those of you that had issues yesterday back up to your normal speeds or is it only slightly improved?

Truthfully I don't need a Gigabit line... I just need the speed I am paying for. COX has been been under hack attack (DDoS) from what appears China. Well at least according to my source from Cox Admin services. There was no fiber-optic damage at all, it's just the story they are running with... My speed in East Valley has been restored for now so probably the rest of the Metro area will resume shortly. On a second note, if we can get a Gigabit line for $70 bucks, SIGN ME UP!!!!

Here is my speed as of NOW...

Wow, I have speed-envy! Very interesting on the insight you shared. I'm still in the weeds:

Here it is from speedtest.net:

Question for the tech-savvy, why would my download speed be so much lower than upload?

Do a few tests in a row/space them out a bit and see if it's consistent. Your download should definitely be quite a bit higher than your upload speed.

I'd connect a cable directly to your router from your pc/laptop/pad to see if your wireless router is an issue. Your router and your source computer/laptop/phone/pad wireless card/adaptor can make a HUGE difference in speed. My laptop had an internal 2.4Ghz wireless card and I was lucky to get 20-30Mbps down. Upgraded to a 5Ghz USB wireless adapter and now I'm consistently in the 55-66 Mbps down. I also have a newer Asus router which is fast.

But....start with a wired connection to your router to establish your base speed. If that's as low as it is now and you're paying for a higher speed, time to call Cox.

I've gotten 50+ mbps through the router, so I don't think that's it. I think Cox is still experiencing some issues. I'd rather have a root canal than call them again so I'll try to be patient. It seems to be getting slightly better:

I wonder if one upgrades to the gigabit speed if they'll proportionally raise the use limit higher also?

I talked to a rep at Cox once voicing concern over the limit issue and they told me if they see the IP that one is watching a streaming service like netflix or some other like service they won't canvas you with letters that you're using too much bandwidth. We have a few users in our house watching Netflix with the "high" setting on/full bandwidth and watch mostly HD programs for a few hours every evening and haven't received any letters. Perhaps we aren't considered heavy users even with that type of Netflix streaming.

Yep, sounds like some issues still exist.

I'm getting our normal speed here at times, then it drops to the 20-30Mbps download at times. Overall, things feel snappy.
