I will be accepting a job offer in Mesa in the next week. The office is really on the borders of Mesa, Gilbert, and Chandler.

I will be looking to buy a house in the $180k to 300k range. I'm 53, single, not interested in nightlife, but am still very active in fitness, golf, shooting sports, motorcycling, and will probably take up mountain biking.

I've looked through the threads to try to get a feel for where I should buy, but am led to no conclusion.

Low crime, the most house I can get for the money, and proximity to the recreational activities I've listed above are really what I'm looking for. A shooting range in my back yard (somewhat rural) would be ideal.

Can any residents with similar interests offer suggestions on where to narrow my search for a house?

You won't find that in the city. it is illegal to discharge a firearm in the city. There isn't going to be anything all that rural in the are you are describing.

Chandler and Ahwatukee are going to be closest to hiking and mountain trails and your job.

A big piece to help answer your question is how much of a commute are you willing to endure?

Further away from your office gives you more house for the money - more land in some places - and more rural feel.

To get a big chunk of your desires you are going to need to accept a 30+ minute commute - and I'm not sure you are going to get a shooting range in your backyard within an hour or more - if at all.

Somewhat of a commute is tolerable, particularly if it is just road without a lot of traffic.

Or if I should give up on that, a comparison of Mesa, Gilbert, and Chandler would be welcomed.

Rio Salado Sportman's club is an outdoor shooting range in the Usery Mtns, off of Ellsworth in Mesa. Perhaps finding an area between this and your work would be helpful? Crossroads of your general work location would be helpful.
