Where are you at? There's an asphalt company just over the Chandler border on Priest/56th south of Ray that can stink things up a bit.

I wasn't outside as late as you posted, but I smelled nothing, and I'm over on the east side of south Tempe.

It may be manure and mulch. Apartments, homes, golf courses and such are all planting winter rye now and manure and mulch are frequently used in the process. It can get bad when the days are so warm like now. It is the smell of autumn in Phoenix letting you know that the cooler days are not far off.

Nights in the 70's still, which is not optimum for rye grass, but you are right, it's starting some places already. I'm not smelling it anywhere around here yet.

I wouldn't describe the aroma of manure as a chemical smell.

I was at Home Depot and noticed the big seasonal display of seeds, mulch, manure, mowers and so on. We got rid of the last of our grass this year. We had about 10000 sf at one time and it's all stone now. I was thinking "man, I am glad I don't have to mess with that this year".

I'm in south Tempe right now and I smell crap. But then again I'm also browsing from the restroom.

Since the OP hasn't been back to provide more info (and must not be smelling the same smell tonight) we may never know.
