A friend that just drove through Billings and described it as very industrial looking (very obvious factories spewing smoke) and that there was a terrible stench that is much worse than Everett or Tacoma. True?

Having hauled gas from refineries I can say they definately stink! You know when you are anywhere around one depending on which way the breeze is blowing. I think before I lived near one I would look up it's safety history with respect to emergency blow offs and fires and any releases. These were kind of a regular occurance at the refineries I went to.

Default It depends on where he was

If you just drive I-90 past Billings it can look very industrial. There are 3 refineries in the area (2 in Billings and 1 in Laurel) and there's a sugar beet factory, and a power plant and a water plant. However, if you go into town, it's not that way at all. I'm not saying it's the prettiest town but it's decent.

The smell is most noticible by the highway and not in town unless the wind blows up from the south.
