We are thinking of relocating to the Phoenix area can anyone fill me in on how hard it would be to find a job in healthcare doing reception/billing/coding type work or position in architecture for my husband (he is a registered architect). We are trying to do some research before we make the big move. Thanks!

Health care is available everywhere. The Abrazo system, Banner system and a group called Integrated Medical Services run several of the major hospitals and clinics in Phoenix - you might look them up on line. Billing, reception, and coding jobs are readily available.

Architecture, I'm not as sure. The housing and building market is so down at this point, but that's true everywhere. On the other hand, before the collapse, there was a lot of interest in building new and interesting buildings downtown like Cielo, DNA, Omega, and CityScape (unfortunately only CityScape started to get built so far.) So I think that market will rebound. I forget the name, but if you contact the Arizona Republic, there is a reporter there who is an architect and reports on the architecture on Phoenix, much like Blair Kamin's work in Chicago. He might be able to provide you with information to start with.

My husband is also a licensed architect and I would strongly advise you not to come to Phoenix right now. Last week I had 4 architects contact our office looking for jobs. The layoffs have started and there are few building projects. All but one of our jobs went up in smoke due to the lack of credit/funding. I would go to Texas and hunt first, although they are also feeling the slow down. Our neighbor is also in medical billing/coding and he had to take a 5% paycut last month. I think we just need to hang on where we are for the time being. Best of luck to you.

IMO you might have to start in a private med office, they have openings. I think Banner is under a hiring freeze, so is Catholic Healthcare West last I heard. Still, if you're in the midwest, like Ohio, Michigan, Indiana...our job market will look fantastic. It's just we've gotten used to several sections of the Sunday paper re;job ads, now we have a section and a few pages.
Architects......not a clue, sorry.
