Okay, maybe I'm naive.

It's known that often if you are about to leave a company, like Cox for cable, they'll offer you some enticement to stick around. I naively thought this was a special accommodation that senior people (like in the Loyalty/Retention department) could do as a favor.

When I had a bunch more problems with Cox a few months ago, they told me, Oh, we'll be able to do something special for you, Oh, we'll be able to set you up with a free cable box. It was just brought home to me that any enticements they offer are apparently nothing they're concocting for you - it's just whatever promotion they're offering to anyone at the moment.

So, yeah, I was gullible.

Sorry, I have Cox on the brain.

If you need really fast internet, they are the only game in town and they know it.

For me, it's cable. But, yes, it's a problem when there's something close to a monopoly. I just discovered that the man in charge of oversight for the City of Scottsdale has left, even though their oversight probably never amounted to much.

What irks me is that I think the government does not seem to see ISPs as monopolies because technically there is a choice. Dial up, DSL, cable, fiber. "Derpy derp, you have a choice, see, there's 4." When realistically everyone knows that by and large none of those technologies seriously compete with each other. Implementation is everything. I really wish this was factored in.
