Hello,

I was wondering for those of you who frequent these areas of CA (Orange county and SanDiego) what is the best route you drive? From OC I dont really see a direct way over to the I-10 or I-8....is it better to do all interstate or taking some of the state hwys instead?

From Orange County (Newport Beach) I take the 55, to the 91, to the 60, to the 10.

From San Diego, I just take the 8, to AZ State Route 85, to the 10.

My parents are in Rancho Bernardo, North County Sand Diego and I usually take the 8 but on my last trip, came back via the 15 N. to the 215 to the 60 to the 10. Bascially North towards Riverside then West. It wasn't bad - a little more desert but not as mountainous. Just a different option if heading to N. County.

If you're planning to take the 8 keep an eye on the weather. I went through some scary fog up in the mountains going that route a couple weeks ago.

Even though I live in North San Diego County, MOST of the time I get on the I 15 up to the EB 60 to the EB I 10. It takes just slightly longer than getting on the I 8 east, BUT, there is alot more civilization both in AZ and CA along the I 10 as opposed to I 8, and that aint sayin much!!

And one can stop at the outlet stores and casinos Well they got them on the 8, but it's so near Diego that you aren't sick of driving at that point. Palm Desert is a beeter place to stretch the legs.

One word of advice for someone that makes the trip from Ventura County to the Phoenix area quite a bit. Make sure that you take the time to rest every two hours. Take a 20 minute break, walk around, run, take a nap. Last year I placed my family in a bad position when we drove back from Phoenix. I ended up falling asleep on the I10 and destroying our van, pushed a diesel (no trailer) off the freeway and he hit a small car. The both of them could drive away from the road. Although we were alright and the most that happened was burn marks from the seat belts and the sick smell of the air bags all was well. I don't mean to hijack this post, just want to place a little fear into the everyone else, because it sure did scare the heck out of me and my family.

Wow...I bet your adrenaline was pumping! I am glad to hear you and your family survived...what a blessing...hopefully something we all learn from.

You are right...about the drive coming from ventura....we are currently in the TO area and my mother inlaw lives in AZ now and for 2 yrs we have done that awful drive across LA to the 10...I hate it. It still amazes me that it takes 2 hrs just to clear the greater LA area...AND that is without any traffic jams. We have been stuck in gridlock getting out of LA and it took us 4 plus hrs. Kids having to pee, being hungry and just being stuck. Just awful.

We were contemplating moving to OC...and I wanted to know what the easiest route was to get to AZ. I think now, we just might move back to AZ and only come to CA for visits. It might be a 2 yr plan as we have already been here for 2 yrs. I would much rather be in AZ anyday over here. Looks like from your screen name you are moving soon too?
