Where in California are you headed? From Phoenix, the two major routes are pretty boring (I-10 and I-8).. There's really not many other options unless you want to go out of your way quite a bit, and even so, it's still not particularly exciting or scenic.

Just do it at night so you don't have to see anything.

It really depends where you are going in California. If time isn't a problem try to plot a course that doesn't get on the interstates at all. Cross the Colorado at one of the crossings near Cibola.

It's still not going to be particularly more "cool" or "scenic", that the interstates, but give it a try, if you want to take the extra time.

Nope. You're pretty well are limited to what you have done already. Maybe up to Cave Creek and on to Needles and across. Way out of your way though. The number of Colorado River crossings is limited. I have done the through Vegas to the Joshua National forest back to Riverside and loved that trip.

We recently took the 10 all the way to Santa Monica and it is a pretty boring, but easy (and LONG) drive. Going through the wind farms near Palm Springs was probably the coolest "sight" on the way.

If you have time, find some place off-beat and interesting to visit on the way.
