I've heard sonic booms before, and I woke up thinking something happened, such as there were low level fighter jets, or some really a-hole pilot flying a big plane low to the ground and crashed.

Turns out around 3:30 there was the loudest thunder I have ever heard in my life, just one loud boom, and it went on for a while. Silence after that.

Someone in Reddit recorded it:

Nope. Didn't hear a thing. Did see leftover lightning in the east on my drive to work, had no idea it was even supposed to rain.

Nope...we did get some hail earlier in the evening though. Apparently there was a tornado in Northern AZ along the I-40.

I believe all thunder will sound MONSTROUSLY LOUD if lightning hits somewhere close to where you happen to be.

Lightning strikes happen all over Arizona.

In south Tempe, got the storm that came up from Tucson(where it sparked a severe thunderstorm warning) after dark last night. Rained hard, big drops, teeny hail. Never heard any thunder.

My wife heard that lightening out near Lake Pleasant in Peoria. That’s something like 20 miles from Tatum Ranch where the strike was recorded. Holy cow.

This current storm was not sent to you from Tucson, it originated off the coast of the Caribbean, and northwards thru Mexico. It rained many hours here in Tucson, with accompanying lightning and thunder, and I thought the Monsoon season ended 9/1? We've had so much rain here in Tucson this season that a multi-prong cacti in our community, with shoots going up to 10 feet+, toppled over. A few guesses: too much water!

Our bereaved landscaper begged the Board here to go thru the expense of standing it back up. They chopped off some prongs, but it still weiged over 3 tons, so they brought in a crew, hooked some cord around it, tied the cord to the back of a big pick-up and up it went!

I saw the weather alerts. I don't know where it started, (I think you might be wrong about the "coast of the Caribbean part, but never mind) but the severe thunderstorm alerts I got were broadcast for Tucson and Pinal County. I watched the storm itself come up from the southeast.

"Monsoon" season ends on September 15, now that they have changed from successive dew points to hard dates to define it. But that doesn't mean you can't have a thunderstorm later than that. Unusual? Yes. And yes, Tucson has had a VERY wet summer/early fall.
