Looking forward to the 2018 season.

We went to several games last year and our favorite stadium was the one in Surprise for ease of getting there from Vistancia (303 Loop and Happy Valley). Best part was they had a beer kiosk out in left field that sold Boulevard Beer from Kansas City; specifically their American Kolsch beer which was awesome on a warm day.

Salt River Fields is very nice too; Rockies and D-Backs play there.

IIRC there were a ton of food choices at Mariner's ballpark in Peoria, not to mention all the other commercial eateries in the Bell Rd / 83rd AVE area. Harkins has a big movie theater across 83rd from the ballpark for those who want to drop off a spouse/kids who don't care for baseball or drop them at Arrowhead Mall which is also very nearby. Very convenient to the 101 Loop with either the Bell Road or Thunderbird Road exits working well.

List of Cactus League teams and schedules is here.

List of Cactus League teams by location is here.

Local news article on the 2018 season.

First games start on/about 23 February 2018.

The West Valley spring training tour is easy.

Surprise, Peoria, Camelback Ranch, and then Goodyear. That would be the Rangers, Royals, Mainers, Padres, Dodgers, White Sox, Indians, and Reds. I guess you could go see the brewers at Maryvale as well. Plenty of breweries, brew pubs, bars, restaurants, and attractions to see in the area. I like the Cubs but avoid that area during spring training. It is a mess getting in and out of that facility.

Cubs would be Sloan Park where Loops 202 and 101 meet which could be a real goat rope of a traffic snarl with long cycle times at traffic signals for local cross streets. I find getting through the downtown area on I-10 to be a mess much of the time. I'm up in Vistancia (far NW part of the region) and to reach Sloan Park I'd be tempted to take the 101 Loop around the north side and down the east side to avoid the city center and I-10 and I-17 traffic. I'd be spending more on gas than the price of the ticket....

I avoid Cubs games like the plague. Not fond of their fans.

Default Cactus League 2018

Spring Training is upon us once again. Curious what locals and visitors have in line for Cactus League 2018. I took 2017 off and didn't attend any games. Very much back into the baseball spirit so I plan to make it out to a few parks this season.

Today I went to see the A's host KC at Hohokam. This stadium has been on my list as a top priority and glad I made it out. The stadium is nice with agreeable concessions. The jumbo dog for $6 at Oakland Links is one of the best ballpark values you'll find anywhere.

Decided to try my hand at scoring a game for the first time since I was 10 years old at Tiger Stadium. Made it through 6 innings when a major distraction and player changes made things complicated. The major distraction was a fly ball that hit a few rows back, caused commotion in the section and then rolled to a stop right beside me. I didn't catch it but, by golly, I'll take it! I've been going to baseball games since I was 9 and this is the first I've left with a ball hit into the stands. An added bonus was meeting Vida Blue.

It was a beautiful day for baseball.

Next weekend I'll be off to Maryvale. Hoping for a sighting of the elusive national treasure Bob Uecker.

Hit the Dodgers/Giants at Camelback Ranch game on Saturday. Traffic management seemed better this year (it couldn't have gotten any worst) unfortunately park operations weren't ready. Concessions were deeply in the weeds all afternoon. I really felt bad for folks that may have flown in who ended up waiting way too long in line for a beer and a dog. Not sure if the stands are manned by service organization workers, but they clearly weren't ready to do business. It's not like the ball club hasn't had this scheduled months ago.

I went to the D-backs v. ASU on Wednesday at Salt River and things were running like clockworks.

I used to go to spring training games in the 70s and 80s. Back then it was a wooden box seat right behind home plate where you could see the players and feel the crack of the bat. Now it is huge stadiums, swarms of people, overpriced tickets and highway robbery food. No thanks.

Go at the bottom of the 6th. Price: $0.00. Sit in the best open seat.
