Crime will soar with the coming lower temps when people actually can be outside all day and night. Its the same here in Chicago, but the seasons are simply reversed.

Actually, the crime is higher in hotter weather. More irritation, agitation, etc. However, this is a reduction of crime from same time last year. So what you say doesn't make any sense. Additionally, this information began in Jan, Feb. Mar, Apr and the summer. Crime started to drop this year in Jan, the coolest time of the year.

Oh that sucks! A reduction in crime doesn't mean an END to crime. There will always be crime no matter how safe a place is; just look at Europe and countries like Sweden. Crap still happens, murder still happens, bad people happen.

One of the best preventions against crime is to carry a weapon. It's even legal here to carry a weapon concealed if you apply for a permit. I'm not saying we should return to the days of the Wild West ... but if more people would exercise their Second Amendment rights more often, the criminals would get the message that we're not going to let them victimize us.

I used to have a neighbor that had a sign on his door that showed a picture of a homeowner pointing a gun, and it said: "Forget the dog. Beware of the OWNER!" I thought that was a good way of deterring would be intruders.

I think this is mostly an American point of view. For instance, crime is lowest and has dropped most significantly in places with the most stringent gun laws. Not only in the U.S., but in Europe, South America, and Asia. Personally, I don't think guns have a direct correlation to crime; I believe other factors matter more. Including the education of the general public, the relationship and status of that relationship with residents and police, willingness to report crime, and poverty. Southern states have the most lenient gun laws and the highest crime rates in the nation. However, is it really because of guns, or because of all the other factors?

You brought up a very good point and i love reading your posts. I would imagine education plays a huge role in crime levels. Now i have a new project. I think im going to compare education levels with crime levels in cities around the united states. Depending on how lazy i am.

I am armed every minute that I'm outside the house (and really, really well armed inside the house), unless I know I'll be going through a metal detector or am wearing elastic waistband clothes at the gym. I open carry when on the motorcycle so the road ragers know they need to make sure I'm dead if they want to mess with me at all. That stuff only deters random crime and makes the criminals turn their attention to easier victims. I still think the best way to not be victim is to not be around people who are prone to criminal activity. Live in a good neighborhood and keep good, honest company.

I've done it during my undegrad. Instead of taking normal psych and soc classes, I took criminal psych and "more interesting" subcategories of the broader subjects. You'll notice an almost direct correlation. Important to remember to avoid over-generalizations of association of assumption. But I think that poverty and education attainment (or lack thereof) are probably the most reliable of assumption hypotheses.
