Good suggestions here already on the used stuff. Someone listed north Scottsdale locations for Mor and for Ashley. There's a Mor store on Elliot Rd in Tempe, and a Costco Home store next to the Costco, also on Elliot, across the street from the Mor store.

Just stay away from cheap disposable furniture from IKEA and you'll be alright.

Some Ikea stuff is better quality than others. Not sure what this poster's financial situation is, but Ikea may be a good alternative if they are on a budget. Granted I wouldnt expect any of the Ikea stuff to make it the 75+ years that my mother's old end tables have, but if the poster is at least looking for "new" furnishings without needing it to last forever, again Ikea is a good idea. It is a great place for housewares for the kitchen and decorative accessories regardless of their furniture items.

You can get some good deals at Costco and Costco Furniture on decent stuff a bit higher end than Ikea. They had one bed for under $400, and a mattress set about the same last time I was there. They have a cute dining set in the stores now for around $500. And a sofa in the $600 range I think. Decorative chairs around $200. TV consoles around $300-400 or something. (You can get some awesome deals on decorative chairs at the Costo Furniture store, they carry much more than is in the main stores.)

Did you see any computer desks at the Costco store?

Pier 1 Imports is also a good place to look.. I work there, and can tell you that while some items are over priced, when the season changes they clearance a LOT of furniture dirt cheap.I just got a couch for 300 before my employee discount.

My friend bought her living room furniture at Costco and it is really nice. The couches also could come apart if you need to move the pieces through tight door ways or staircases. Some Ikea furniture is not bad. Wal-Mart also has a new Canopy line that is decent priced and some of the pieces are similar to Pottery Barn in terms of style. You can have the pieces shipped to a store near you to pick up so you save on shipping costs, downside is you can only see the pieces online first.

Just go to IKEA and see for yourself. If possible, go during the week when its less crowded. There is a lot to see.

That said, I'm a fan of consignment and thrift stores. Why buy new when you can prevent something wonderful from going in a landfill! My Sister's Attic is excellent- located in Scottsdale. Terri's Consignment is good too and near IKEA- give it a look.
