We will be moving to the Phoenix area soon and we have two dogs. We live in Alabama and they currently stay outside. We have concerns about their safety outside in AZ. because of the heat. Is it safe for dogs to stay outdoors?

Put it this way... would YOU like to live outside when its 115? Even with all the water in the world available and a shaded spot, i think thats pretty inhumane. And unsafe. Depending on the the dogs size, and your location when you move, they could end up some critters dinner as well.

I don't have a dog, but i do have pets, and i just don't understand the point of having a pet if its relegated to spending its life outdoors.Pets are supposed to be part of the family aren't they?

Sorry ... its a peeve of mine.

No. Your dogs will most likely die from heat. Water left for them evaporates very quickly.

They need to have access to plenty of clean, cold water to quench their thirst and keep their tongues cool. They also need access to deep shade (not something half arsed).
As long as those two things are provided - they will be OK.

FYI dogs are social animals - it is cruel to leave them alone for long periods at a time. If one's schedule mandates doing that - it is probably better not to own any dogs at all.

I saw that you had mentioned this in another thread. Who was "they" wilberry, and why would anyone poison your dog? I would probably have reacted the same way that you have. My dogs are my family. They can be noisey and a pain in the rear at times, but so can my neighbors children. I hope the person that did this to your dog was caught.
As far as leaving my 3 labs outside in the dead of summer, never. We live near the base of a mountain, and we worry as much about rattle snakes (rare, but have had them in the yard) as we do the heat.

I can't imagine they do well in the humid Alabama summers now. You should not plan on leaving them outside, for all the reasons stated. A dog door into a room in the house that has AC, if you don't want them to have the run of the entire house, will do the trick.

Interesting question, rrascoe.

Definitely, some dogs seem to prefer the outdoors over being stuck indoors in spite of the booger weather, however, as most have already posted, 110 plus degree heat can be a killer.

Also, depending on the location of your new home, leaving a helpless dog outdoors through the night is sure death. There are lots of critters roaming around after dark searching for dinner.

That is why i don't own one. I can't give it the attention and love a dog wants.

agree with the above - if you take on the responsibility of dog ownership, then go the extra step and provide them adquete food, shelter and socialization

some breeds do better than others, however it's pretty much a guarantee that a brachycephalic breed dog (boxers, bulldogs, pugs) will have a really tough time cooling themselves and probably die from heat exhaustion ....... i know first hand of 3 boxers who met that summer fate
