Does anybody know of any places to take a canoe near Phoenix? My wife and I just recently relocated here. We have a canoe that was given to us and a 3 year old who's dying to take it out on the water. We're looking for a smaller pond, nothing fancy required. Thanks for any and all assistance!

Tempe Town Lake is the best place for an easy, gentle canoe ride (the only type I'd attempt with a toddler on board). You'll need to buy a permit for your canoe. More info here:

If you're interested in a weekend trip, Watson Lake is Prescott is also nice for canoes:

I would not try the Gila River, some German POWs tried it in 1944, they found out there was no water in it....................

Lynx Lake in Prescott, about a 90-minute drive from Phoenix, they do not allow motorized boats, so it's nice calm water.

Do not try Lake Pleasant, often times the drunk kids on Jet-Skis and Boats will knock you over with their wake.

Tempe Town Lake works, but you're basically in a giant canal with nasty water.

Not sure if they'll let private canoes on Kiwanis Lake in Tempe or not. It would be worth a call to the Tempe Parks department, though.
