This thread should be a lesson for all the Phoenix naysayers who thought the grass is greener on the other side. This is a very common phenomenon. A lot of people leave Phoenix tired of the heat and all the supposedly bad things they think only to realize Phoenix has a lot of positives that they took for granted.

It's true...tho it probably goes both ways, some leave and it works out, others leave a nd come back. I personally know several people who tried to move away...one to LA, another to NYC and one even out of the country. All came back or are trying to come back. I think in theory other places sound better but in reality once you get used to the easy lifestyle of Phoenix and the conveniences, it's hard to adjust elsewhere (like, why do I need to park on the street and do my laundry in the basement paying$1.50/load in quarters all while paying $2200 in rent for a 1 bedroom apt AKA San Francisco).

To the OP: Why did you initially move to N.C...what didn't you like about Phoenix that you thought N.C. would be better and why didn't it work out?

Huh? How do those people fit into the discussion?

We're talking about people who previously lived in Arizona...thought they would like it better elsewhere, went ahead and moved, saw it wasn't all they thought it would be, and end up moving back to Arizona.

There are probably just as many who move to Phx from other places and find out its not what they imagined and go back to their hometown.

Phoenix lovers always say if you don't like it here its only because you don't understand how bad it is everywhere else. As if its unfathomable to not like living in the middle of a desert. Some people don't like it here and never will.

Opportunity, Sunshine, Outdoor activities, a growing sense of community and core, a lively lifestyle (golf's biggest party, one of the biggest sports cities in the nation with MLB, NBA, WNBA, NHL, NFL, college sports, Spring Training, Bowl Games, All-Star Games, etc etc), change in lifestyle, COL on par with pay much more so than any other large metro area, dropping crime rates (there were 100 fewer murders in 2009 compared to 2007 when 222 were counted for), and on and on...

Oh! And one of the LOWEST teen violence rates in the nation as well (compare that to Atlanta, Charlotte, CHICAGO, etc) and you get the point.

The reasosn for leaving Phx. are complex, however, for returning:Outdoor activities,Clean,Laid back,it's very uptight here in the south, bible belt, and we are conservative, but this is to reserved for us.Infra structure it's falling apart here and they don't seem to care, and when they do build something it will take them many many years to complete. There is nothing to do for Families. There are many more reasons as well, that is for starters.

WHEW!! Thank Goodness we didn't go ! A couple years ago my daughter and I visited NC and fell in love with it. We planned to move there and I even applied for a job there. ( didn't get it, a blessing in disguise). So one thing or another came up, mostly activities we enjoy doing here, and we never went !! Love it here, heat and all, good and bad !

I know two families that left PHX for NC and came back within a year! Both had lived there previous to moving to AZ the first time, got homesick and returned only to appreciate the old adage that you can never go home again. Both mentioned the same kind of things OP does. I was/am surprised because NC seems to enjoy a pretty favorable reputation. It is discouraging because I have NC at the top of my short list for places to move when/if I ever can.
