I wonder if there is a good place to start from, where I can walk to several shops in the same area. I will be coming in from Tempe. I'm not familiar enough with the city yet so I appreciate your help.

If you mean shopping at "thrift shops", those are spread out all over and are not located in any one place, including along the light rail, where you could walk from one to another easily.

There's a Goodwill on Camelback and 18th Ave, the light rail passes right by it.

A bus trip not many miles up Scottsdale Rd will get you a Salvation Army store and a Goodwill store within a mile or so of each other in south Scottsdale, too.
