hell gate bridge .

appropriately named it sits over one of the most treacherous waterways where the east river and harlem river in nyc meet .

the currents have sunk more ships . rikers island jail sits in that waterway .

this bridge is now used for amtraks accela to boston and the north east region . it has 12.5 thousand volt over head power lines .

The weather was nice last weekend so I hopped on the westbound express train and got off 45 minutes later in the town of Reichenbach. I started my bicycle ride from there and my first stop was the Goeltzschtalbruecke, a railroad viaduct that spans the Goeltzsch River valley. This bridge was built from 1846-1851 and still carries rail traffic on the busy route on the Saxon to Franconia trunk line (Dresden to Hof). It is known as the world's largest brick bridge, built on a base of granite blocks.

It is mostly original, and was not bombed or damaged during WW2. About a dozen years ago, the dual track rail line was electrified with overhead catenaries, so a concrete base was added at the track level. The trains cross the bridge now at speeds near 90 mph.
