Rayin, I have to disagree. While I prefer my 5d paired with my L series lenses, the 85mm 1.8 and the 5d are a magical combination. The full frame sensor adds a level of clarity that the 40d just cannot compete with. Again, I own both. For recreational use, the 40d is a fine camera. However, I know I personally drastically prefer my 5d.

If course the 5D is a better camera than the 40D. It's also a lot more expensive, too. However, there are no guarantees that one or the other will yield a better image. A lot depends on the user, and the rest on pure luck (the right moment, the right place, etc.).
Both the 50mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.8 are real nice lenses considering that they don't cost very much, and work well with most Canon cameras. So is the 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM, the 200mm f/2.8L, and the 135mm f/2.8L.
Obviously the price tags are very different. I was just adding to the post that if the OP is looking for a camera to eventually use professionally, I think it's worth it to spend the extra money on the 5d body. Again, two sides of the coin

If you like your 10D, you'll like the 40D a little more. While I'd like to have a 5D, I think for bird photography the 40D would be the better choice.
I agree. The 40D is better for birding and wildlife in general than a 5D. 5D is better for landscape and portraits. So which camera is better depends on what you want to shoot. I have the 40D and love it. However, today I'd spend the extra money and get the 50D.
