If she's trying to shoot the twins together, f1.4 probably won't have enough depth of field for the two of them. When I'm shooting couples I usually use f4 - f5.6.

If your friend wants nice pictures inside, her best bet would be to get a flash that will tilt and swivel. Probably the best reasonably priced one for Canon is the EX 430. With it she could bounce the light from the ceiling or a wall, even the wall behind her, to get nice soft lighting. She'd just have to be careful that what she bounces it from is neutral toned or it'll pick up unwanted colors.

The f1.4 lens has some other benefits besides the faster glass. It focuses faster and smoother too. I have the 1.4 and wouldn't consider trading it for the 1.8, even though I rarely shoot it wide open. It's just higher quality lens. The f1.8 is a good sharp lens and great for the money, but compare the two side-by-side and you'll see a major difference.

Its funny, i have both and i really cant say i see much difference except as you get fully wide open... the f1.4 is a better build but ill be darned if i cant see much difference optically..

my wife and i both shoot so sometimes we just grab the 50mm's and when we get home if it wasnt for the numbering on the photos we cant tell who took what...
while one may autofocus faster the truth is if you didnt mention it in practical use i wouldnt even have been aware of it....

if you got the dough the extra stops of the 1.4 is worth it but if not i dont think your giving up much with the f1.8

these are a mix taken with both . the nikon d80 got the f1.4 and a high iso of 800... the d300 got the f1.8 and a high iso of 1600. at this point i cant tell you which i took with the f1.8 and marilyn with the f1.4...the point is double blind you cant really say one is noticibly better then the other.

even side by side we have taken the same shots at times and except for differences in our angles or settings again we cant say one is better or worse then the other in practical use.

they all look like the same lense on the same camera under practical use...

heres the results...any differences you see are more the results of our different settings. perhaps if we had comparison shots side by side differences maybe seen but again in practical use those differences may not even be a factor ..sometimes we see differences and perceive it as better in the more expensive product but its not really any better just slightly different. . but the point im making is that it still looks like 1 lens 1 camera was used....

1=1.8
2=1.4
3=1.4
4=1.4
5=1.4
6=1.4
7=1.8
8=1.8
9=1.8
10=1.8
11=1.4
12=1.4
13=1.4

My goodness! You need to reduce the size of your photos for web posting. It takes forever waiting for them to show on the screen!

Most applications used for photo processing have an option to "Save for Web."

For example, I scale my photos around 850 pixels horizontally (or vertically depending on the photo), and the application trims the short size accordingly. Then I use PhotoShop to save the photo at maximum quality, but on "Save For Web Posting." As such, the photo is saved to around 300 to 400 kb in size. These photos load fast, both on this and other forums as well as your friends and family's computers if you e-mail the photos to them.
