I would invest in trained social workers, boys and girls clubs and religious/social centric organizations. Invest in paid mentors that help low income children and families. Until the cycle is broken it will be lather, rinse, repeat regardless how much money is thrown at it.

Then I would spend money to place left hand turn lights at major intersections.

I would help fund a real deal, smart, savy, out of the box mayoral candidate and make sure every freaking resident of the city high and low knew and felt this political savior.....amen

I've thought about this many times. The first thing I would do is buy up all of the abandoned significant historical buildings and restore each of them meticulously. I would also go through neighborhoods like Spring Garden, most of the North Side, the Bluff, etc. and restore all the row-houses that were abandoned.

I would also donate whatever money is necessary to put streetcars back in the city, connecting all of the urban neighborhoods (as they once were)!

Or better yet, turn them into autonomous roundabouts.

Aside from gondolas, I agree it would be nice to just invest in a bunch of currently-contemplated projects and move them along--and in a nice fashion. So, high-quality buildings in the remaining North Shore plots, high-quality buildings in the Civic Arena site, One Grandview, the Burns & Scalo site on Fort Pitt, Riverparc, Oakland portal, all that Academic Village stuff at Point Park, and on and on.

By the way, what I would REALLY like to do is invest in Wilkinsburg (my actual home municipality, and one of many reasons I am not likely to become Mayor of Pittsburgh-although I appreciate the thought). There is tons of potential here, and a little investment could go a long way. I'd do something with the old train station, something with the Penn-Lincoln Hotel, surround the Busway stop with transit-oriented development, restore a bunch of other cool buildings in the commercial district, and so on.

I would pay Republicans to move to the city that way we can at least get someone to challenge the status quo.

Republicans would not be the answer since they are against cities to begin with, let them fend for themselves in the suburbs. What we need is to fund a grassroots progressive party that can then gain power in the city government.
