I plan on getting an engagement ring for my lady this Christmas. I've been told there is a Marlene Harris Collection that sells antique Jewlers a little outside of Pittsburgh but not sure how she would feel about getting used a ring. I'm a college student and I'm on a budget. She likes rubies. Guy have any suggestions? Would greatly appreciate it.

I think you need to talk to her.

I know from trying many pieces on throughout the years that I am NOT a fan of antique/vintage jewelry at all.

It's supposed to be a surprise.

I proposed to my wife without a ring on a Friday night. We got up Saturday morning, drove to some Downtown jeweler, she picked out a ring in about 20 minutes. Hell, I spend more time choosing stereos. It must be in the woman's manual.

I would ask your fiance what she wants, and get used to that!

Trust me, it's a lot easier if you let them drag you around and show you what they like. While it may take away some of the 'surprise' they will get excited by going and looking at the rocks and thinking about what you are going to do.

Wait what? You guys actually went out shopped for the engagement ring together? I always thought an event like this should be a surprise. But yeah... Not sure if I should get an antique. That's not really my big concern cause I know what she wants already. My concern is where should I get it from? where have you guys bought you engagement rings? Where is a good place in pittsburgh?

The store my husband got mine from no longer exists.
My son just got engaged in January and married in July. He, surprisingly, got the ring at a great price at Henne in Shadyside.

And yes, people DO ring shop together. But since you already know what she wants, all you need now is her ring size.
When you pop the question is the surprise....

Default Bling is often a joint decision

I remember when I was in your position (congratulations!) and thought that was an insane suggestion, but the fact is, she'll probably want and appreciate some input in the process. My wife and I ended up going to the place together.

You love this person and if you'll be spending the rest of your life together, this will not be the last decision that's made by more than one person. I promise you that.

I had to deal with this very thing for a long time.... an antique isn't considered USED. My ruby was a family piece from 1870. I was honored to wear it.

Of course.... around our tenth wedding anniversary I did find out it was fake. It really was from 1870 -- but the ruby was lab grown. Rubies were the first fakes.

That was when I got a diamond....
