This is terrible. We just moved to the area and I have been reading a lot about the "trouble" on the South Side. I know there have been stabbings and vandalism, but are car crashes like this one common? Is this kind of blatant overserving common?

Thoughts and prayers are with the girl's family.

Fatal car accidents in the South Side in particular aren't common. But fatal car accidents involving alcohol are indeed a regrettably common event in the Pittsburgh region, and indeed throughout the United States.

By the way, there is a pretty strong correlation between how rural a county is and how high the per capita car accident fatality rate is (or how high the alcohol-related per capita car accident fatality rate is--on average over time the two rates tend to track each other).

So Allegheny County tends to have a much lower per capita car accident fatality rate than the surrounding metro counties, which in turn tend to have lower rates than the rural counties in Western PA.

Not in a pretty format, but here are the counties in and immediately around the Pittsburgh Metro, alcohol-related traffic fatalities per 100,000, per year from 2005-2009, plus the five-year average, sorted by five-year average. I also included Philadelphia County so you could see how the lower per capita rate for more urban areas extended to the most urban county in PA.

2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 Average
Philadelphia County 1.65 1.58 2.48 1.69 1.74 1.828
Allegheny County 2.92 1.64 2.79 1.97 1.81 2.226
Beaver County 4.56 4.6 2.89 4.64 2.33 3.804

The South Side is actually very safe and occurrences like this are rare. But, it is a bar/club/alcohol/party/young people soaked area so stuff does happen sometimes (usually DUI's and disorderly conducts).

Car accidents are a regular occurrence everywhere.
Vehicular homicide in the South Side is not.

I noticed this jerk already took down his Facebook profile. I was going to give him a piece of my mind. I should have done it as soon as I heard about this tragedy.

It doesn't happen much in the southside because there is heavy traffic, small narrow streets, lots of traffic lights and stop signs... so the max speed people are going in SS is usually pretty low, so inturn not that many fatal accidents result (alchohal related or otherwise)... However, I'm willing to wajor the % of people driving under the influence is probably extremely high.

Motor vehicle accidents are responsible for more deaths than murder.
