[LEFT]A plan to redevelop a key piece of property in the city’s East End has made new progress.
John Odell, a principal of Michigan-based Warner Pacific, confirmed his company reached an agreement of sale to buy a parcel of buildings that include the former Day Baum Chevrolet dealership at the corner of Baum Boulevard and Roup Street in Friendship. While Odell wouldn’t comment on the company’s plans for the building until after a community meeting scheduled for Monday, Sept. 20, community leaders say they include targeting discount grocer Aldi as an anchor tenant.

Interesting that they suggest offices are more marketable than apartments (maybe that is the Oakland zero-vacancy effect).

Love this idea. At first I thought they were going to tear the building down, but I see that they are going to re-use, which is great. It's a very interesting building, and there used to be lights in the tower that roated around at night. Also great that parking can be on the second floor, since they used to run cars up and down when it was a dealership.

I think Aldi would do well in the area - it's at the nexus of a lot of stuff in the East End and easy to get to. Plus there's a dense population base. For people in Friendship, it's just a short walk.

Here is the building. It is art deco like we see in South Beach. baum and roup pittsburgh - Google Maps

It would be a travesty to tear it down. There are a few other art deco buildings on Baum.

OK. I thought they were talking further down (closer to Bloomfield). It's catty-corner from Rite Aid and a block up from Market District.

Thank you for posting!

The old Don Building? I heard it was either going to be a lifestyle center (like Bakery Square) and/or a gym.

No way. The local residents will not allow any use of the building.
