So they cited funds as an inability to keep an ER open, but have the money to do this? Unless it is mianly Temple that is pushing the funds to make this work.

They've had Temple med students there for years. There were/are? banners on the orange building on that first street that crosses Liberty Ave, across from the parking lot.

West Penn-Allegheny's former iteration had a med school before they went belly-up that time, I guess they never learn.

I am sure if they can't get a med school started they will find a way to sue UPMC for interfering.

Same with Allegheny General.
Banners on the light poles around the building too.

Yeah it was Allegheny University of The Health Sciences and was the first medical school in the nation to go bankrupt.

West Penn Hospital School of Nursing has been there since 1892 and was the first nursing school in the nation to accept male nursing students. Even though it's one of the few diploma programs left, the school is matriculated with Clarion University so students can continue on with those earned credits towards a Bachelor's degree.

What a great history that hospital has, and the whole building is huge and awesome with a bridge connected to the parking garage. I just don't know how a medical school can happen if there aren't many patients.

There has been rumors flowing about both Cleveland Clinic and The Mayo Clinic looking at the hospital. I don't have anything against UPMC but let's face it, they have no competition in this town and that is never a good thing for any business, including healthcare .

They are supposed to unveil more of the med school plan in a few months. We'll see what happens. I hope whatever it is, that it's a plan that works out.

That's not implausible--depending on the circumstances, an ER could lose money but a med school might make money. The question might be whether they can get the startup money.

Edit: Here is another article:

http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pitt.../s_718330.html

Apparently the idea would be to fill a market need for more doctors in general, and more doctors specifically for Western PA (with Pitt having become a national school).

I think it's a great idea. We need doctors to stay in our area. Pitt admits too many foreign students who leave the state when they are finished.

I haven't seen any more news on this.

EDIT: This article mentions the medical school but doesn't really talk in any more details http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/11093/1136370-28.stm
