Here's how I would lay out Pittsburgh's musical tastes:

- Majority of adults are into Bon Jovi/Poison/1980's rock
- Large section of adults and 20 somethings are into mainstream Kenny Chesney-esque country
- Large portion of young people and adults listen to whatever is played on FM radio (FM still has relevancy to the majority of Pittsburghers, just look at how big Froggy and WDVE are)
- Fairly large following with hipsters, indy/alt rock, and WYEP
- A medium size group of young people are into the hip hop scene
- Small (but rapidly growing) group of young people are into electronic music

Folks that into other niche genres (real metal/punk/psychobilly etc.) make up an extremely small portion of musical tastes.

Maybe a majority of adults native to this area.

Can't rep. Good assessment. But I want to add the further from the city you get, the majority is 80s rock, classic rock or country. The closer to the city is more indie, electronic, hip hop.

Pretty much right on. Except I would switch hiphop to Fairly Large and indy/alt rock to Medium. Just from my experience though

Is that also connected to a person's race...or is there a lot of cross-over in that regard as well?

Meaning, are there a lot of caucasian Pittsburghers into hip-hop?

Hip hop is just popular in general because the majority of it dominates pop radio and Billboard's Hot 100.

Yes, quite a few in fact. We do have a decent hip hop scene here and many white kids are right in the middle of it. However, on the flip side it seems that a large number of black dudes are into FM radio rappers which is why I would say that the "hip hop heads" group as a whole is medium sized.

A good way to look at it is to see what types of music groups are playing at various venues. Local hip hop groups are playing at smaller venues like the Shadow Lounge and Time Bomb while local rockers are playing Altar Bar and Mr. Smalls alongside national acts.

Is AMERICANA at all popular? (Old Crow Medicine Show, etc.) Y'know the alt-country type of bands? (Jayhawks, etc.) Or even that old outlaw country like Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, etc.

Seems like it is in other similar cities - Knoxville, Portland, Minneapolis, etc.

Does that kind of bypass Pittsburgh, is there any radio programs that plays at least a little bit of it?
