Notion Restaurant closes in East Liberty - Pittsburgh Business Times
wow - what happened? I went twice last year and really enjoyed the food. When did the change of menu happen? A shame really - I must admit the place was a little 'formal' for me, but that's just 'coz I don't like formal that much anywhere. The food was worth the formality though. Bummer...

I wonder if Evergrey is talking about the change Racicot made back when he was still in Oakmont? Doesn't make much sense otherwise.

I got there once, during pre-opening. Even though not every dish was a winner, most were compelling and delicious and it was an interesting experience that the wife and I were glad we had. But it was the type of food/service we wouldn't do more than once every year or two.

Hmm. Seems more like it was an experiment to see if any of those dishes took hold. I wonder if any did?

I'm not convinced that yinzer food cooked via molecular gastro really has much of an audience. Seems kinda silly.

no one makes me wear pants - ever

i just prefer restaurants that don't take themselves so seriously. Notion wasn't too bad in that respect, but I had a run a couple of years back when I went to several really formal places (some for work) and it just turned me off. I'm sad notion has closed - their food was very high quality indeed.

This is different than the change in Oakmont. He basically took an amazing experience and turned it into a run-of-the-mill Italian spot. It was fine, but Nothing noteworthy. It was pretty obvious that he wanted to be in East End of the city. I always figured he changed the menu (he even dropped the name Notion, reserving it for his real interest) strictly for cash flow - to seed the new location.

I visited Notion several times in Oakmont; a great experience and he seemed to do pretty good at that location. I did not visit the East Liberty location since I understand he left the oakmont location under less that ideal circumstances....at least from the side of the story I heard. I don't know his side of the story. Maybe I was unfair. But the events left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth - but not the food. I love what he did.

I can't wait until this trend trickles down to Pamela's, Primanti's or Eat n' Park. "Eleven dollar pancakes? Last time I'll be eating there!!!!," says the guy who usually only tipped eight bits.
