None of those compares to the pro of a real book:

- It's a real book.

Yea, and...? Other than it being a real hunk of wood pulp and ink, does it have any other benefits over an e-book?

If you don't get it, you don't get it. Enjoy your empty hunk of plastic, hope your DRM treats you well.

And when the technology goes out of date, buy the book all over again for a different format.

Same reason I don't go for digital music. I'll have my CDs and book collection the rest of my life. Books never go out of date and CDs pretty much last forever. Hell, I still have vinyl and 78s from the 1920s.

I'm convinced that "modern" technology developments for reading and listening to music are gimmicks created by an industry trying to re-sell us things we already bought.

Digital music and books are good for people who just want to read something once, or listen to something until they grow tired of it. Real books and tangible mediums are for book-lovers and collectors who want to hold something for posterity.

Computers crash, books, music, movies, etc. get lost. You have to buy them over again. Give me a hard copy anyday.

As far as music, I do prefer a hard copy too, but I will download the song and burn it to a CD. If it's something I really do like (or from an artist I enjoy a lot, I'll buy the original CD.)

I don't completely avoid e-books. I first read Frankenstein in... I want to say 8th grade on my Palm m100. I've read more than a handful of books that way, whether it was my original m100, one of my iPaqs, or the Kindle app on my Android phone. Hell, I've even read a few books straight up on PDF or TXT files on my laptop/desktop here and there.

Sure, it's convenient. But it doesn't compare in any way to a real book in your hand. And despite being an infinite resource, they still want full price for e-books as if they have to create, store, and ship each one individually beyond a simple file transfer.

I am in complete agreement with everyone who prefers books to e-readers.

Reading from a Nook or Kindle is like reading off of a tablet. I love turning the page and holding the actual book in my hand.

Even though I did not go to Border's all that frequently, I think it is sad that they are closing. I get most of my paperbacks from used book stores; and hardcovers from the library.

This trend to convert everything to technology is disturbing to me.

I just hate how it's turning people (namely my generation) into socially-aloof and mindless drones. Nobody really even talks on the phone anymore. As I've learned from work nobody checks their voicemails; they just see a missed call and either dial the number OR text it to find out who it is. Back in Reston I can't tell you how many times I had people there who were texting just walk into me and keep going without even acknowledging the fact that they had collided with me. I see so many people in other vehicles who have a passenger that is on the phone/texting instead of talking to the driver or other occupants, and, sadly, I also see many DRIVERS texting. I still recall one time in Reston when friends and I went out for dinner. After we placed our orders the entire table (save for me) whipped out their Smartphones and started playing games, Tweeting, updating their Facebooks, going through photos, texting, etc. while totally ignoring their REAL LIFE company all around them. I worry that within another generation or two people will have lost the art of non-electronic social communication.

I read through a whole book on my iPhone once, using the Amazon Kindle app. I persevered through the whole thing, but I can't really say I enjoyed reading it that way. There were a few times, very few, that I was happy to be able to read the book at some place where I otherwise wouldn't have carried a physical book or even a Kindle with me. But the phone is full of several other things I could be reading during those times (news feeds, etc.)

I haven't gone back and gotten another book this way. I think an actual Kindle device may be better to read on, but so far I haven't been moved to get one. There are two of us in the household, and we might both read any given book we purchase. That's usually easier with a real book.

Can you transfer a book from Kindle to Kindle, does anyone know?
