We moved here in August with our 2 daughters and just started thinking about preschool for our 2 year old. We were excited to find out that CMU's The Childrens School is awesome, only to find out that people put their UNBORN babies on the waiting list as soon as they find out they are pregnant! So we are on the waiting list but its nearly impossible for us to get our daughter in for the fall.
Does anyone know of any great/excellent preschools in the Regent Square, Squirrel Hill, Oakland areas that dont have a waiting list years long?

Thanks!

I don't know about waiting lists, but the Carriage House, Shady Lane, and Kentucky Avenue School are all worth looking into.

Good luck!

There are two preschools on the CMU campus: CMU Cyert Center and CMU Children's School. You might have the two confused... the waiting list on the Cyert Center is the one people get on early, not the Children's School. The reason for that is because the Cyert Center provides full daycare starting with infants (in addition to preschool) where as the Children's School is half-day starting at age 3.

Cyert: Cyert Center for Early Education - Carnegie Mellon University

Children's School: The Children's School ~ Carnegie Mellon University

We've used Kentucky Ave (2s), Carriage House (2 morning 2s), and the Children's School (3,4,kindergarten). We got wait listed at Cyert, so that wasn't an option for us, though we have friends who have used it and liked it.

Im not confused, my daughter is on the waiting list for The Childrens School and when we got her on they are the ones who told us people put their kids on their list as soon as they find out they are pregnant. We arent looking at The Cyert Center because we are looking for preschool, not all day care.

Thanks for the recommendations about Kentucky Ave and Carriage House. Ill definitely look into them.

I have heard good things about a mother's day out in regent square/ wilkinsburg. I think it is at 2nd Presbyterian Church. I have also heard good things about the preschool at Shadyside Prebyterian Church. The preschool at the JCC is probably also worth looking into.

Don't leave out Shady Lane--that is the most convenient for Regent Square.

Ah, ok. I don't think that waiting list is so bad you need to get on it that early (although there is nothing to prevent it, as your friends did). I know several examples of families that got in the Children's School registering a year or so in advance. In fact, we registered our then 2 year old in late summer 2003 (before we moved here) and got in for the 2004 3 year old class. (For reference: the afternoon slots are a bit easier to get than the morning ones.) The problem is that is a bit late to be looking for next year... good luck!

Wasn't trying to leave out Shady Lane - Just trying not be be redundant with other posts.

The MDO program that I was referring to would probably be equally convenient to Regent Square. Do you have any idea where it is Brian? It has to be pretty close to you. I just don't know for sure because we need daycare so I never had reason to look into it. Several families I know with a SAHP have sent their kids there and say good things about it.

Sorry, I was actually responding to the OP's post just above yours.

Unfortunately I don't know any details about it, for the same reason (we're both working).
