Wilkinsburg CDC Receives Renewal, $350K in Funding - Forest Hills-Regent Square, PA Patch

Quote:
Wilkinsburg Community Development Corporation recently received a Neighborhood Partnership Program renewal resulting in an additional $350,000 in funding from TriState Capital Bank.
Good news for the WCDC. In a time when non-profit funding is very limited, $350K will be a very welcome injection, certainly. Now to watch for WCDC press releases indicating how they plan to allocate the funds.

That's great news! I'm interested to see what Landmarks has in mind for next steps as well.

i get the impression that landmarks is done with major projects in wilkinsburg now, at least in hamnett place. the only thing i know of that they have planned is doing some landscaping to make a park/community gathering area on the lot where the hamnett place community garden is. they have done a ton here (the crescent, the wilson, some funding and land use for the community garden, and i think 6 or 7 home renovations) so i'm not complaining.

the wilson apartments are now occupied and i believe people were supposed to start moving into the crescent this week!

awesome news about the cdc as well.

A while back they were looking at more individual home restorations--I don't know if that is still a possibility.

The only other building I've heard of possibly being done in Hamnett Place, was the Falconhurst Apartments.

I believe the plan was to move to the Franklin section of Wilkinsburg next. I haven't heard of any PHLF projects being scheduled as of yet.

I don't think Hamnett Place has crossed the improvement threshold yet to start attracting private investment. Maybe once the Franklin section sees improvement, private investors may feel comfortable enough to move into the area. The area may not start attracting private investment until large developers take an interest in TOD in Wilkinsburg, but that could easily be 15-20 years.

Interesting to see Tracey explicitly endorse exploring a full merger with the City.

that is interesting. i mean, it's worth at least thinking about for sure, and i 100% support merging school districts, but i really like having a small local government that is accessible and at least somewhat accountable. i'd consider that a con i'd have a hard time getting past although there would definitely be pros as well.
