Tirade,

Crap man... Laws can be changed. The Burgh never had food trucks so what do they know. Get off this it's the way it is so be it mentality. That's why I left the Burgh. I suggest the person interested go for it. If the city can tolerate a casino, for God's sake, they can tolerate a taco truck. Geesh... where is your Pittsburgh can do attitude.

Tirade,

Any business that will pay taxes will be welcome. Is the City that well heeled that it can afford to thwart a potential successful business venture?

Actually, there are some very nice food trucks around Pitt and CMU that are worth checking out. The Indian food cart--Kashmiri--across from Soldier's & Sailors has the best Indian food in the city.

As for changing the laws, I'd gladly vote for any candidate supported reforming the food truck laws and that's the extent I'm willing to go for food trucks. Hurl whatever insult you want at me for saying this, I'm in no position to fight the good ol' boy network over businesses that aren't even my own.

Your logic has no place in Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania politics. Politicians care more about protecting than their own than tax dollars. Remember, you're in the state that had to fight tooth and nail to buy six-packs at a supermarket.

I suppose it's the restaurant owners who would have an interest in maintaining these laws, whatever they are, as well as the owners of commercial real estate.

yeah, the OP should definitely invest a bunch of money in a business that will get shut down by the health department.

yes, the laws should change, i would definitely support an effort to lobby to change them. but for now, it would be stupid to just open an illegal business and hope the city "tolerates" it. the casino didn't just open up and hope not to get shut down, they worked with (bought off, whatever) the city to be allowed to open. someone opening a taco truck does not have that kind of clout, but an organized effort to change the laws might work..

Kevin Sousa (Salt of the Earth, Station Street Dogs, etc) is trying to setup a workaround for food trucks:
Quote:
What if I were to provide a space (a sizable parking lot) to quality purveyors of mobile food stuffs on a regular basis? In hopes of creating a consistent home where small businesses knew that they would have an affordable venue from which to target an audience looking for tasty snacks in a different kind of environment. I would like to have this mobile food court of sorts up and running by the second weekend in June.

Beehive in Southside serves coffee and booze.

Tim Hortons would do great here. As would a Jets Pizza. As would a Coney Island...right in the middle of Southside.

Damn.

I don't think so.

The Original Hot Dog of Oakland fought for 10 years to get a South Side location, finally got a location across from the Burger King and failed within a short time after opening.

Pickle Barrel had good dogs, and was around before South Side became Pittsburgh's tourist destination, and isn't reopening after their fire.

There is plenty of other junk food available over there, there really isn't a lack of places. When I lived over there, I liked the Crossroads' hot dogs which are a lot cheaper than anything a coney island would offer.
