Probably the biggest age-crossing melting pot in my area is D's--I often refer to it as our equivalent of a European town square given how it attracts every segment of the local population from retirees to families with young kids to hipsters and students and so on.

But D's doesn't have much of an olde-timey feel these days: it is more representative of contemporary Pittsburgh.

Is the food decent? I've only gone there for the Beer Cave. I wish I could walk to it more easily.

They offer standard American food (pizza, burgers, wings, hotdogs, salads, apps, and so forth), but it is pretty good and fairly priced. The fries are battered and quite good if you like that style (which we do). All in all it is a nice menu to complement having a couple of beers, while still being able to bring kids (or whoever).

Edit: Updated website (much better than the old one, with their draft list available):

It is an awful lot of fried goodness, and they also hold up well to toppings like chili & cheese.

D's came up as the consensual "Best Place to Buy Beer in Pittsburgh" when I was doing research prior to my move, and it hasn't disappointed me.
