That adds up to about 690,000 people, which I believe would put CONNECT at about #19 on the list of U.S. cities by population, which is approximately right given the relative size of the Pittsburgh Metro.

Makes sense, but Mt. Lebo and FC will never, ever, go along with that.

What is the likelihood of this actually happening, despite the obvious benefits in efficiency? Is this like removing the $1 bill from circulation: no matter how much the savings, no one would actually support doing it for sentimental reasons?

Too many people want to protect their fiefdoms.

Ironically, both states have the same ass-backward local government structure.

Death to the borough!

I was offering that to answer the question "What might Pittsburgh look like if it had annexed its way to a size commensurate with the relative size of its Metro?"--in other words, purely as a hypothetical.

As far as what could actually happen, I agree that barring state action, we are unlikely to see a full merger. However, various agreements to work as a unit on certain issues are possible, and in fact that is what CONNECT is about (providing a forum for such agreements to be made).

I understand, been here forever, the best we can hope for is maybe a head tax from all Allegheny County residents to help the City.

For sure, when pigs fly. But, we need to do something. Pgh used to be the 11th TV market, I believe we are at 25 now.

That's more reflective of the metro area (22nd in the country) than the city itself.

I forget the source, but I remember hearing that Pittsburgh used to be the 6th largest media market, back in the smoky days.
