Having a budget for this unrealiable support with three months worth in savings account would be a solution. That way she threwould have money available when he misses a payment. Actually, that's a better solution than buying property or helping her pay rent each month. I could fund three months of child support in an account for her to use the months he doesn't pay. When he does pay, she can deposit the back support payments into the account.

But the absolute best solution is for her to find a place to live that allows her to live on her own income. She's better off being entirely self sufficent because she wouldn't get any child support for eternity if he died.
Very good ideas. Plus child support ends when the kids reach adulthood. If they're teens, it won't last long.

How sad. He probably thinks he's spiting her by this, and all he's doing is hurting his children.

And they see this and know it, too.

Seriously..Why do job creators get this break? I feel terrible for your friend I had a crappy practice husband too. It is not fun. My oldest is 23 and I am unsure if he will ever get "over" his crummy Dad, but he is a great young man and has family and friends that adore him.

Tallysmom has it right. Being spiteful to the mom really hurts the kids regardless how much we may fake it.

ETA: sorry I can't help with the housing.

If she would have those child support payments paid through the courts she would get them regularly because the courts would garnish his wages to get them (IF your state does that). At this point unless he can find a good roommate to split costs of a single family home she may have to settle for a cramped apartment until she is on better financial ground. When things loosen up a bit she can be a wee bit more particular and move up a bit on her residence.

Personally I would not get involved in her financial issues or purchase a place and be a landlord as you have stated. You have no idea where this relationship is going in the future and you really should not purchase something for someone else unless you plan on living there yourself and keeping the property in your name only just in case things do not work out in the future.

The fact that you care enough to want to help is great however, the risk is currently greater for all involved, just be careful and make decisions with your brain and not your heart when it comes to finances and living arrangements.
