SO TRUE! I use to work in Manhattan's Financial District, and it is completely dead at night. Even in Manhattan, the lively areas are where people live, like East Village, Greenwhich Village, etc.

I was also surprised the OP's parents only wanted a condo in downtown. To me, same thing, it's like they wanted a condo on Wall Street. Sure, you'll see people working during 9-5, but no neighborhood activity outside of that whatsoever.

And, I definitely would never go down to Wall Street in Manhattan to stroll around for the evening, looking for beautiful people walking by, it's just not going to happen there either. Again, business center where people work. It's not a beach and it's not a fashion capital of the world. If Wall Street in NYC doesn't have it, Downtown Pittsburgh certainly wouldn't either.

I don't know, it sounds like the parents are a little mislead. It sounds like they probably live in a neighborhood in some outer borough of NYC somewhere, and probably have all their amenities there and such. But, somehow they've been mislead to think that living in Pittsburgh would be like making a move to an affordable Manhattan, when that's not the case at all. Pittsburgh would be more like making a move to Brooklyn or Queens or the Bronx, but a bit more safer and affordable, and unfortunately a lot less internationalism.

The Strip is one possibility if they'd be OK with a loft that's not a high-rise. Some good restaurants that are open pretty late and have nice bars nearby (Eleven, Bar Marco, Kaya, etc.), an easy walk into downtown, and a lot of activity during the day, especially on the weekends.

The South Side has some interesting new construction units and I agree with others who've said that's a neighborhood that might be a better fit.

This is a possibility: What is boutique living?

It's brand new, kinda high rise, & in a bustling day/night area with the possibility of beautiful people nearby.
