RAD halts funding for August Wilson center - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Why in gods name the place was green lighted on such a prime land in the first place is beyond me.

It should have been a part of another museum, not a stand alone structure.

Agreed; nothing against African American heritage but that's a very niche subject that's not going to attract much clientele by itself, not to mention the only time I was there they had very little in terms of exhibits anyways.

The last big paragraph did have some promising things in it. I was intrigued by the air rights line. Maybe vertical residential development (like the project should have had in the first place) could be the savior?

The project was clearly ill-conceived from the beginning... One of the nicest and most expensive AA cultural centers in the country in a city with one of the smallest minority populations??? When things like this happen it usually involves someone getting very rich. Has anyone followed the money on this?

yep, seems like it would fit as part of a city history museum.

The local foundations played a big part in funding, and probably some state money, as well. I know that the foundations require periodic reporting on how the money was spent, so there probably isn't some smoking gun or someone getting rich.

Ex Pittsburgh City Councilman Sala Udin was instrumental if not adamant in seeing this through. He supposedly was shaking down every government and philanthropic organization that he could. There is place for a museum like this in Pittsburgh. It should be inside one of the old storefronts on Liberty or Penn Downtown.

Am I the only one who thinks the build looks really, really phallic? Nobody ever mentions that in news stories.

I guess the architect put that feature in to remind people of 900 block of Liberty Avenue's historic role as the epicenter of smut in the Pittsburgh area.
