How safe is the neighborhood around Monongahela Street? My aunt use to live on Monongahela in one of those old row homes that now look abandon on Google Maps and we might run by and look at the old place when we come to Pittsburgh.

You'll be fine. It's a poor neighborhood, but not an especially dangerous one.

Thanks! I loved going there in the '70's, and always loved those cool brick row homes. Sad to see so much of the past is such disrepair.

Its pretty dumpy down there in Hazelwood, but I can't see any problems if you visit during the day.

The Pittsburgh gang crime map, rates the area on Monongahela south of Hazelwood Ave. as a pretty bad ghetto.

Monongahela Street is safe, but Hazelwood's bad streets make the neighborhood one of the top 20 roughest areas of Allegheny County... Its only one of a few streets located in the quiet, non gang affiliated part of Hazelwood north of the YMCA. So the street is safe, but the neighborhood has been in a state of rock bottom ever since the steel mill shut down years ago.

Let us know what your impressions are about how the area has changed from the 70s! I also love the historic row homes and Victorians.

I thought the OP was talking about the Monongahela Street in Swissvale.
