I would love to have a Cheddar's closer than West Virginia or Ohio.

Speaking of Ohio, I hate that we have to drive all the way to Poland (near Youngstown) whenever we want some ice cream at Friendly's.

That implies that it is not possible to get good ice cream in Pittsburgh?

I would love a Meijer. So much better than Wal-Mart.

It implies someone is looking for that familiarity. Taken your way, it would imply it's not even possible to get bad ice cream in Pittsburgh.

I'm just thinking it's a long way to go to get some ice cream! The food Friendly's offers is definitely not worth the drive as far as I am concerned, but is Dave and Andy's or even Cold Stone Creamery so bad as to make a 80+ mile round-trip worth it for the ice cream?

I know that chains do well because of the familiarity they provide - you can go to one anywhere and you know exactly what to expect and there definitely is some value to that. A colleague from Germany told me that he loves to eat at TGIF Friday's when he's in the States. I ask him why he doesn't try some of the local joints when he visits a city here, and his response was that he knows what to expect from a TGIF Friday's wherever he finds one.

So: where can one find the WORST ice cream in Pittsburgh?

The worst ice cream is at those cruddy buffet feed bars like Hoss's and Golden Corral. I don't even think it's ice cream.

I don't know if they still do this, but my first "legal" job eons ago was at Friendly's. And I got fired because I put too much ice cream into a serving. They had a specific way of scooping a cone or dish where you basically created a thin ribbon of ice cream that folded over on itself, leaving a lot of air space. It looked like a full scoop, but it wasn't. I just stuck the scoop in there and took out what I thought was a "real scoop".

Friendly's just didn't work out in Pittsburgh. They had a store on Cochrane Rd near Bower Hill a few years back but I guess there just wasn't enough business.
